A sign at the trailhead reads: (Click to expand)
“A silver rush in 1879 sent miners scurrying to the Flat Tops from Leadville. Carbonate, the first Garfield County seat and first post office, was established in the spring of 1883 but was abandoned that fall due to the extreme cold. It was moved to Defiance, the town that is now Glenwood Springs. None of the original Carbonate buildings were retained.

Transfer Trail was originally part of the Ute Indian Trail system, then later became a toll road used to transport lumber from the Hip Roof Sawmill at Windy Point. A sheep farmer then bought the land and herded sheep through the area. The road system connected through the Flat Tops to such distant towns as Meeker and Yampa. Most of the area is now preserved as the “Flat Tops Wilderness.””
