Forest Service Numerical Trail List

Below is a numerical trail list of mainly White River National Forest Service trails around Aspen. Why are numbers missing? That’s a good question.

Each Forest Service District has a set of numbers to work within for numbering their trails, a range like #1800-2100. The National Forest Service’s intent was to have certain geographic locations have a range of numbers to work with the understanding there are way more numbers in that range than trails. This allows for changes, things like new trails being brought into the system through planning and old trails that are closed and decommissioned through planning. That is why the numbering system appears to get a bit out of order. Additionally, there are Forest Service District Boundary adjustments, we won’t get into that. The point is there will always be numbers that don’t have a trail to allow for long-term planning. Every once in a while there’s a totally random number that is not within the District numbering, there is typically a story to that that only the District can answer.
